Most occupational therapists recommend using 10% of your body weight plus one pound to figure out the ideal weight of your blanket. For example – a person weighing 70lbs would need an 8-pound blanket ((70x.10)+1). However, this is just a general formula. Since we are all unique individuals, our needs are also unique and should be individualized. The most important thing to remember is that your weighted product should never be too heavy. You should be able to easily manipulate and remove your blanket. Weighted blankets should ONLY be used as a soothing and calming tool –NEVER as a restraining mechanism.
